頸部気管に対する3種類の機械的刺激による咳嗽誘発試験を試みた。①気管圧迫：頸部気管を数回にわたり経皮的に圧迫。②頸部伸展：頸部を後屈させることにより頸部気管を伸展させる。③音叉による振動：音叉の振動を頸部気管に20秒間与える。以上の咳嗽誘発試験の咳嗽誘発率と日常生活における発声による咳嗽出現の有無との関連を検討した。
咳嗽が誘発されたのは①27.7％、②39.8％、③36.9％であり、刺激局所の掻痒感の誘発のみも含めると、いずれの試験も約50％の症状誘発率であった。咳嗽や掻痒感の誘発は、日常生活上の発声行為による咳嗽出現と有意に相関していた。刺激による誘発咳嗽は、ほとんどの症例で治療により咳嗽が改善するとともに消失した。

Three types of mechanical stimulation as cough challenge tests were tried. The cervical trachea was compressed softly with fingers several times (tracheal compression test: TCT), the trachea was stretched by retroflexion of the neck for five seconds (tracheal stretch test: TST), and a vibrating tuning fork was placed on the cervical trachea for 20 seconds (tuning fork test: TFT). The relation between phonation-induced cough and the results of these provocation tests was assessed.
The positive rate for provocation of cough was 27.7% with the TCT, 39.8% with the TST, and 36.9% with the TFT. Provocation of an itchy sensation with or without cough occurred in about 50% of subjects undergoing each test. Provocation of cough and an itchy sensation by each test was significantly more common in subjects with phonation-induced cough. The tests usually became negative after cough was improved by treatment.
