悪性脳腫瘍、特に神経膠腫は正常脳への浸潤能が極めて強いため治療方針（手術、放射線治療、化学療法）決定の際には腫瘍細胞の浸潤領域の正確な同定評価が極めて重要である。この腫瘍細胞浸潤はMRI画像－T2強調画像における脳浮腫領域に発生していると考えられている。しかしながらMRI画像でみられる脳浮腫現象は腫瘍細胞浸潤がなくとも血行障害など他原因によっても誘起されることが知られる。つまり、現在の悪性脳腫瘍治療における画像診断のデファクトスタンダードとされているMRI画像のみでの悪性脳腫瘍の腫瘍細胞浸潤評価には限界があるというのが一般的に受け入れられている考え方である。本研究ではこの問題を補完するために、11C-methionine PETとFDG PETという二種類の異なった核種を用いたPET検査を独自開発のvoxel-wise解析法を用いて、悪性脳腫瘍の腫瘍細胞浸潤評価を正確に評価できるか否かを検証することを目的としている。

Malignant brain tumors are infiltrative in its nature, making it extremely difficult to assess the tumor margin in the white matter of the brain. In this study, the investigators attempt to elucidate the possibility of using both FDG and 11C-methionine PET for the assessment of tumor cell invasion into the white matter of the brain using a voxel-wise analytical method in brain tumor patients.
