1. To identify the prevalence of HIV in patients who undergo major surgical procedures.
2. To identify the common early complications following major surgery in HIV positive patients and compare with HIV negative patients.
3. To determine whether HIV positive patients who had major surgical procedure have increased length of hospital stay than HIV negative patients.
4. To determine whether HIV positive patients who had major surgery have increased mortality rate as compared to HIV negative patients.
5. To determine whether HIV positive patients on antiretroviral therapy have better outcomes than HIV positive patients who are not on therapy.

Patients with known HIV status or who consented to HIV testing.
Patients 18 years and above

Cases undergoing re-operation within a month of previous surgery.

Prospective cohort study. The study was carried out at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and Harare Central Hospital. The study was conducted from June 2015 to April 2016.
a total of 215 patients who underwent major surgical procedures at the two main teaching hospitals in Harare.
