日本の中学生を対象に精神疾患に関する教育を行い、従来日本の学校教育で行われている通常授業と比して、精神疾患を含めた精神的不調に援助希求行動をとった生徒の割合が増大することを示す。精神疾患に関する教育では、精神疾患を含めた精神的不調とその対処方法に関する知識を扱う。

Mental health literacy education targeting junior high school students in Japan would have significantly more improvement in help-seeking behaviour for mental health problems compared to the regular health education provided in Japanese school education. Contents of mental health literacy includes knowledge of the mental illness, how to deal with them, and how to reduce the stigma.

MIDUSに関して、線形混合モデルにおける授業後および3か月の追跡検定の結果は、時間の主効果またはグループ×時間の交互作用に有意差が認められた。RIBS-Jに関しては、授業後の結果は、時間の主効果またはグループ×時間の交互作用に有意差が認められた。しかし、3ヶ月の追跡調査では有意差は示されなかった。ロジスティック回帰混合モデルにおける援助希求の行動の授業後および3ヶ月の追跡調査では、時間の主効果またはグループ×時間の交互作用の有意差は見られなかった。

対象者は、日本の栃木県にある公立中学校の1年生156人（12から13歳）で構成された。学校の選択は、本研究の協力が得られ、介入の実現可能性を優先した。125人が研究に参加し、介入群（n = 51）と対照群（n = 74）にランダムに割り当てられた。最終的な解析対象者は116人(介入群50人、対照群66人)であった。介入群の男子は25人、女子は25人、対照群の男子は30人、女子は36人であった。

The subjects consisted of 156 first-year students attending a public junior high school (aged 12 to 13 years; Grade 7; Year 8) in Tochigi, Japan. The choice of school was based on the availability of study cooperation and the feasibility of the intervention. Of these, 125 consented to participate in the study and were randomly allocated to the intervention group (n = 51) or the control group (n = 74). The final number of participants included in the analysis was 116 (50 in the intervention group and 66 in the control group). There were 25 males and 25 females in the intervention group and 30 males and 36 females in the control group.

The exclusion criteria were those who could not read or write Japanese at a level equivalent to that of a Japanese primary school graduate. Participants in the study provided written consent from both the subjects themselves and their parent or guardian. Of these, 125 consented to participate in the study and were randomly allocated to the intervention group (n = 51) or the control group (n = 74). After excluding those who were absent from the classes or did not complete the assessments, the final number of participants included in the analysis was 116 (50 in the intervention group and 66 in the control group).

MIDUSの授業後調査では、時間またはグループ×時間交互作用の有意な効果があった（B [95％CI]時間の主効果=-8.40[-10.07、-6.73]、p<0.001、時間×グループ交互作用p = 7.36[5.14、9.57]、<0.001）。また、3か月のフォローアップにおいても同様に有意差が見られた（B [95％CI]時間の主な効果= -6.14[-7.81、-4.47]、p<0.001、時間×グループの交互作用p = 4.19[1.97、6.41]、<0.001）。
RIBS-J futureでは、授業後の時間またはグループ×時間交互作用の有意な効果があった（B [95％CI]時間の主効果= 2.20 [1.45、2.96]、p<0.001、時間×グループ交互作用p =- 1.85 [-2.85、-0.85]、<0.001）。RIBS-Jの3ヶ月フォローアップではグループ×時間交互作用の効果は有意ではなかった（3ヶ月フォローアップ（B［95％CI］,p値：時間の主効果 = 1.84 [1.85, 2.60], p < 0.001; グループ×時間交互作用 = -0.72 [-1.72, 0.28], p = 0.158）。
援助希求に関連する行動(すなわち、「誰かに相談する」)に対する授業後または3ヶ月のフォローアップアンケート結果のいずれにおいても、時間の主効果またはグループ×時間交互作用において有意差が見られなかった。
