Interventions/Control_1 A massage intervention is performed for quiadriceps and gastrocnemius muscles in a superficial and quick manner for both sides. Massage is aimed at each muscle for 20 seconds (10-second effleurage and 10-second tapotment) without oil of cream at fast rhythms. Massage for quadriceps is conducted in supine, whilst massage for the other muscle is performed in prone.
Interventions/Control_2 A comparator intervention consists of lying in supine and prone positions for 40 seconds respectively.

Key inclusion criteria Participants are recruited from male undergraduate students at the Tokyo University of Technology. Healthy male adults who do exerises more than one time per week are considered. A questionnaire is used to recruit eligible subjects.
Key exclusion criteria Subjects with pain during vertical jump or those who have a history of surgery for lower limbs are excluded.

Results
Based on our findings, it appears that the quick short-duration stimulatory massage for lower-limb muscles has no acute effect on vertical jump performance. Any types of preperformance massage for the purpose of improving athletes' explosive performance immediately
can be a waste of time or even undermine their performance. The author would not argue against the use of preperformance massage in all circumstances because its effects on endurance, flexibility and athletes' psychological states should be also considered to maximise athletes' specific aspects of performance. Clinicians and athletes should be aware of the current evidence and they are encouraged to use a traditional active warm-up, and the use of preperformance massage should be justified by individual needs and sound clinical reasoning
