This study consists of two phases. Phase one of the study is a cross-sectional study to establish the prevalence and predictors of obesity among adolescents. Phase two of the study is a cluster randomized controlled trial of an intervention program for the same cohort of the adolescents

The intervention is a five-session module and delivering once every two week for ten weeks.Each session takes about 90 to 120 minutes and will be conducted during school hours.

Male and Female
Adolescents who are studying in the selected secondary schools and being diagnosed as overweight and/or obese will be invited to participate in this study. Diagnosis of overweight and obesity will be determined by measurement of body mass index for age z-scores (BMIZ) based on the WHO Child Growth Standards. Overweight was determined as BMIZ greater than one standard deviations, while obesity was determined as BMIZ greater than two standard deviations.
Overweight and/ or obese adolescent diagnosed with chronic asthma, diabetes mellitus, psychiatric disorders or other serious medical conditions; those who are taking medications that might promote weight gain or weight loss; those who are already participating in any weight management programme.

Findings from this study demonstrated that the integrated school-based intervention program was effective in reducing Body Mass Index (BMI) and BMI-for-age z-scores among overweight and obese participants. In addition, the program was also effective in improving breakfast consumption frequency, physical activity levels, self-efficacy in terms of healthy eating, healthy weight and perceived physical activity and body satisfaction.

The baseline socio-demographic characteristics of participants were similar between the intervention and control group, except for the sex. There was no significant difference (p > .05) between the intervention and control group in all the outcome measures.
200 participants in each intervention and control during baseline.
During immediate post-intervention, there were 182 participants in the intervention group and 193 in the control group.
During 3-month post intervention follow-up, there were 160 in the intervention group and 161 in the control group.
No adverse event was reported.
