Objectives

Narrative objectives1

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a rehabilitation approach based on the theory of behavior modification for elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis based on the basic information (Gender, age, complications, height, weight), HRQOL, instrumental ADL (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living: IADL), fear of falling, and depression, and to examine the effectiveness of a rehabilitation probe based on the theory of behavior modification for patients with knee osteoarthritis aged 65 years and older who underwent rehabilitation in our hospital.

Results

JOA score, FES, FAI, GDS, and SF -8 improved significantly (p < 0.01). MCS was also negatively correlated with FES and age (r = -0.456, -0.368), and GDS and age were positively correlated (r = 0.453). Gender was extracted as a factor affecting the HRQOL scale at the last observation in PCS (p = 0.046). MCS was extracted with FES as a factor (p = 0.039).

Baseline Characteristics

Between May 2020 and March 2022, 30 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were treated conservatively and rehabilitated with a patient education program.

Participant flow

The patient education program was based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) by Sedlak et al., and patient education using pamphlets was provided during the rehabilitation intervention.

Adverse events

None

Outcome measures

The survey items were patient basic information, instrumental ADL (FAI), fear of falling (FES), degree of depression (GDS), HRQOL (SF -8), knee function assessment (JOA score), and X-ray classification (K-L classification), and the survey method was a self-administered questionnaire at the start of rehabilitation, 1 month after the intervention, and at the end of the rehabilitation intervention.
