本研究の目的は、空気や骨の影響を受けにくい、歪みの少ない高分解能拡散強調MRIを開発および最適化する事、および真珠腫性中耳炎患者を対象として開発された撮像法による診断能を、従来使用されている拡散強調像と比較して感度、特異度、正確度等を用いて評価する事である。

最適化した撮像法を用い、30名の患者に関して、真珠腫性中耳炎の診断能を評価する。具体的には、病理組織結果もしくは手術所見を知らない2名の神経放射線科医が独立に、従来法および新しい拡散強調画像の画像を異なる時期に別々に読影（評価）し、画像上における真珠腫性中耳炎病変の有無を記載する。
