周術期口腔機能管理を実施した全身麻酔下食道がん手術患者。周術期口腔機能管理を実施しなかった同数の患者をHistorical controlとして過去にさかのぼって選定する。

食道がん手術患者について診療録から後方視的に下記の項目について調査する。周術期口腔機能管理を施行した群と、施行しなかった群（Historical control）を同数になるように登録する。周術期口腔機能管理の有無と術後肺炎の発症との関連性について、propensity score法を用いて多変量解析を行う。周術期口腔機能管理の内容としては広く行われている術前の口腔衛生指導、歯石除去、歯冠研磨、舌苔ケアなどであり、具体的な方法や施行時期は問わない。
調査項目：年齢、性、腫瘍の部位、進展度、貧血、術前の血清アルブミン値、術前のクレアチニン値、喫煙歴、呼吸機能、合併症、手術方法、手術時間、出血量、術後挿管の有無、術後嚥下障害、歯科介入の有無、術後肺炎発症の有無

The objective variable was the occurrence of postoperative pneumonia. Pneumonia was diagnosed via the presence of fever, elevated white blood cell counts, and pulmonary infiltrates requiring antibiotic therapy. we defined the predictor variables as: 1) patient factors: age, sex, body mass index, smoking habit, drinking habit, diabetes, hypertension, preoperative serum creatinine, preoperative serum albumin, and forced expiratory volume 1%; 2) tumor factors: site and stage; 3) treatment factors: thoracotomy, operation time, blood loss, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and postoperative dysphagia; and 4) oral care intervention. Patients who had not smoked for >1 year were classified as not having a smoking habit. The tumor sites were divided into the upper, middle, and lower esophagus. Tumor staging was classified according to the Japan Esophageal Society's criteria. Postoperative dysphagia was defined as choking when the patient started a paste diet after surgery, exhibited aspiration during swallowing (via videofluoroscopic examination), or continued tube feeding at the time of discharge.
