Objectives

Narrative objectives1

The objectives of this cross-cultural research over 3 years, is in three phases:
Phase 1: explore academics' mental health attitudes, beliefs, kowledge and practice for base-line knowledge on mental health literacy in academics.
Phase 2: organization of an educational program based on Phase 1 feedback and adjusted Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) in each country to improve mental health literacy.
Phase 3: the mental health literacy intevention will compraise of a workshop based on MHFA, with embedded evaluation.

A workshop based on Mental Health First aid will then be offered to all intereted academics in Japan. Pror to the workshop, pre-survey of knowledge of mental health, social distance and confidence will be given at the biginning of the first session of workshop. The workshop will comprise of face-to-face content and online information (8 hours). A post workshop questionnaire will be given following the workshop and again at a 6 months' follow-up.

A covenience sample of eligible participants will be recruited from an interested academics in Faculty of Health Sciences

Key exclusion criteria

Two exclusion criterai for the forcus group (intervention 1): 1) Staff witha mental health academic backgroud. 2) Staff out side of Health Sciences faculties will not be approached to partyicipate. No excludion criteria for the Educational intervention program (intervention 2).

Three focus groups on students with mental health issues revealed following themes.
1) Reflection on mental health issues in Japan with subthemes "family issues", "society expectations and changes", and "stigma", 2) Reflection on students' mental health issues with subthemes "student behaviors", "staff involvement", and "barriers encountered", and 3) Potential supports with subthemes "university assistance", "communication and connection", and "intervention and prevention."

Baseline Characteristics

15 university academics in Japan towards health science students

Participant flow

Participants needed to be academics in faculties of Health Scientists, for example: nurses, laboratory scientists, physical therapists, paramedics, and midwives. A flyer concerning the study was given to the three universities through staff meetings, with contact details and information.

The purpose of this research was to explore the attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and practices of university academics in Japan towards health science students with psychological/mental health issues. This study used a qualitative descriptive design.

Other related information

Due to the retirement plan of the main researcer (Rosanna McMaster) at the end of January 2020, this study will be finalised at the same period. Therefore, Reserach plan was drastically changed. That is, focus-group interviews were conducted with Japanese academics teaching health science students to explore academics' mental health attitudes, beliefs, knowledges and practice for baseline knowledge on mental health literacy in Japanese academics. These results will be published.
