Objectives

Narrative objectives1

A pulse oximeter is a monitor that can non-invasively and continuously measure arterial blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) by attaching a sensor to the fingertip. However, nail art that blocks light transmission can affect the measurements. In this study, we examine how much nail art affects SpO2 and how to deal with it.

Interventions/Control_1

Arterial blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) is measured for all subjects under each condition. Therefore, no assignment is made. A commercially available nail tip (false nail) coated with manicure is prepared in advance. In this study, this is called nail art. Nail art is attached to subject's nail using double-sided tape. At first, SpO2 is measured using a pulse oximeter under the condition that nothing is attached to the fingernail (using Nellcor sensor DS100A and Nellcor oxysensor IIID-25). After that, nail art is attached to subject's nail, SpO2 is measured (using DS100A and D-25). After that, probe is rotated 90 degrees (in the direction where the fingers are pinched from the left and right), and attached to subject's fingertip, and SpO2 is measured (using DS100A and D-25). In addition, SpO2 is measured under the condition that probe is attached to big toe (using D-25). Values measured under each condition are compared.
