The purpose of this study is to clarify the effectiveness of music therapy for terminally ill patients and research trends in Japan and abroad. A scoping review will be written that consolidates and organises the data that have been identified by qualitative studies on the effectiveness of music therapy for terminally ill patients

Patient: terminally ill patients, adults
Concept: literature referring to the effects of music therapy for terminally ill patients
Context: studies analysing the effects of music therapy for terminally ill patients, literature written in Japanese or English,including all reporting years and study sites, academic journals, literature available in Japan

Key exclusion criteria

When the subject of the music therapy is not a patient (e.g. family member or healthcare professional)
When the subject of the music therapy is a paediatric patient When the purpose of the research is to verify the effects of complementary and alternative therapies other than music therapy (aromatherapy, mindfulness, etc.) and the main purpose is not to measure the effects of music therapy
When the subject of the music therapy is distinguished by disease, etc., and the patient is not limited to the terminal stage (cancer patients, dementia patients, ALS patients, etc.)
When there is no reference to the effects of music therapy (analysis of music therapy methods, etc.)
When the literature is written in other than Japanese or English
Quantitative research
When the literature is not held in Japan or on the Internet
When the literature is case studies.

*This study is not subject to ethical review as it is a literature review.The date entered under 'Date of approval by ethics review' is the date the protocol was finalised.


This study will be conducted in accordance with the reporting guidelines for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The electronic databases used to search the overseas literature are Pubmed, CINAHL, Cochran Library and PsycINFO, while Medical Journal Web and CiNii Research are used to search the Japanese literature. The search formula is given below. The retrieved literature is screened for duplicates using Rayyan and then independently screened in three stages by two reviewers.
Extract categories and themes from the accepted literature and compare them to create a new categorisation. Consolidate, organise and describe the results of each literature according to the categories.
